What does cine mean in a DICOM viewer?
Cine playback displays the images of a series in sequence, like a movie. A multi-frame angiography or ultrasound file can contain a time sequence inside one DICOM object. An ordinary CT or MRI stack contains separate images that can also be played through; in that case the movement may represent position through the body rather than time.
The viewer keeps the series and frame controls available so you can pause and inspect an individual image instead of converting the study to video first.
Load a run and control playback
- Open your DICOM folder and select the intended series in the left-hand list.
- Allow the run to finish loading, then press Space in the active image panel to play or pause. Playback is also available under More → Playback.
- Move the pointer over a cine panel to reveal its transport bar. Use the previous and next frame controls to inspect adjacent frames.
- Scroll over the image to pause and scrub through the sequence, then resume with Play or Space.
Choose a useful playback speed
The transport bar has an FPS field for the selected series, from 0.5 to 120 fps. The Playback speed menu offers presets for all runs. Hovering over the FPS field shows the cine rate recorded in the file when available.
The requested speed is a viewing setting, not a performance guarantee or a new measurement of acquisition timing. Decoding, image size and the computer can affect playback. Multiple playable panels loop independently at their own rates and sequence lengths; side-by-side playback is not a promise of frame-locked temporal synchronization.
Export cine video for a presentation
Use the export workflow to choose a sequence, output format and frame range. Check the output before sharing: overlays or text burned into the image may contain identifying information, and hiding a name is not a complete de-identification process.
Movie export is part of the Basic viewer. Trial exports have limitations. Keep the original DICOM files if you need their metadata or full pixel information later.
Common questions
Why does my DICOM series show only one frame?
First confirm that the selected series contains multiple images or a multi-frame object. Wait for decoding to finish, and check whether you opened a still-image export instead of the original run. For a loading error, contact support with the app version and error text; do not attach patient files to the initial message.
Can I turn off automatic cine playback?
Yes. Viewer Settings includes “Auto-play dynamic series (US/IVUS/XA/RF) in cine mode on load”. You can leave it off and start playback yourself.
Does cine playback require Professional?
No. Cine playback and movie export are included in Basic. The 14-day Professional trial needs no card; continued use requires a paid licence.
