DICOM VIEWER FOR WINDOWS · RESEARCH & EDUCATION

DICOM viewer for Windows 11 and 10. Open CT and MRI, then explore in 3D.

Open CT, MRI and angiography studies from a folder, a ZIP file, a DICOMDIR disc or File Explorer on your Windows PC, without uploading the images. Compare series, explore a 2×2 MPR and 3D layout, play cine runs and subtract angiography, edit DICOM tags and copy labelled layouts into PowerPoint slides. 64-bit Windows 10 and 11, from the signed installer or the Microsoft Store.

No card required. After the trial: five-minute sessions, or Basic or Professional.

Actual OmniDICOM capture: cut into a CT volume with the 3D scalpel, turn it, then restore it. Sample imagery is de-identified; the Windows and Mac apps have the same tools and menus. Demonstration has no spoken audio.

Install on Windows 11 or 10

There are two ways to install the same app on 64-bit Windows 10 or 11:

  • The signed installer (.exe) from this page. It is Authenticode-signed; when a newer version is out, the app offers it and installs it when you choose Update now.
  • The Microsoft Store. The Store installs the app and keeps it up to date. Microsoft signs the apps its Store installs, so it shows no SmartScreen download warning; Store updates can arrive later than the installer, after Microsoft’s review.

The tools, menus and plans are the same either way, and the same as on a Mac.

Open DICOM files on Windows

Click Open and choose Open DICOM folder for a whole study, Open DICOM files for single files, Open ZIP archive... for a ZIP (password-protected ones included) or Open DICOM CD/DVD for a disc with a DICOMDIR. You can also drag files, folders or ZIP archives onto the window. A DICOM file does not always have a .dcm extension; opening its folder finds it either way.

From 1.1.5, right-click a .dcm or .dicom file in File Explorer and choose Open with ▸ OmniDICOM DICOM Viewer. Installing leaves your current default viewer as it is; choose Open with ▸ Choose another app, select OmniDICOM DICOM Viewer and choose Always if you want double-clicks to open OmniDICOM. Explorer opens each selected file in its own viewer, so open a whole CT or MR stack with Open DICOM folder.

See CT and MRI in more than one plane

For a suitable volume series, the 2×2 MPR layout shows axial, coronal and sagittal planes together with a 3D view. Drag the crosshair in one plane and the others follow; switch the 3D view to MIP or volume rendering, and cut into the volume with the 3D scalpel, then restore it.

MPR needs a reconstructable series: a single image or a time sequence is not a CT or MRI volume. Saving a 3D model as STL needs a Basic or Professional subscription.

Angiography, cine and DSA

Play multi-frame angiography and ultrasound runs, pause on a frame and set the speed. For angiographic runs, DSA subtracts a mask frame, with pixel shift and Magic Mask to align it. Both are part of the Basic viewer.

Images for PowerPoint slides, tags and research copies

Copy Image (Ctrl+C) copies the active panel and Copy Layout (Shift+C) copies every visible panel as one labelled picture, drawn at 2400 or 3600 pixels on the long side, ready to paste into PowerPoint slides. Patient identifiers are left out by default. From 1.1.6, Save as PowerPoint (.pptx)… also saves the image or the layout as slides, with the measurements listed beside each picture.

The DICOM Meta panel edits supported tags across a series; De-identify writes a copy under the DICOM PS3.15 Basic Profile; Export as NIfTI saves a series as one .nii.gz volume.

The same app on a Mac

OmniDICOM runs on Apple silicon Macs with macOS 13 or later as well, with the same tools, menus and plans; in Professional, Denoise needs macOS 14 or later on a Mac. Where Windows uses Ctrl in a shortcut, a Mac uses ⌘. One licence covers one computer.

Common questions

Does it run on Windows 11 and Windows 10?

Yes. OmniDICOM runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and Windows 11. Install it with the signed setup (.exe) from this page or from the Microsoft Store.

Should I use the Microsoft Store or the installer?

Either: the app is the same. The Store installs and updates it through the Store, and Microsoft signs the apps it installs, so there is no SmartScreen download warning. The installer updates when you choose Update now in the app; Store updates can arrive later, after Microsoft’s review.

Can I open a .dcm file from File Explorer?

Yes, from 1.1.5. Right-click it and choose Open with, then OmniDICOM DICOM Viewer. Installing does not change your default viewer; choose Always under Open with, Choose another app, if you want double-clicks to open OmniDICOM. Explorer opens each selected file in its own viewer, so open a whole CT or MR stack with Open DICOM folder.

Do my images leave my PC?

No. Studies are opened and processed on your computer and are not uploaded to us. The internet is used to start the trial, for licensing and to check for updates; PACS transfers go only to the servers you configure.

Is this a free Windows DICOM viewer?

The download is free and every computer gets a 14-day Professional trial, no card required. After the trial, OmniDICOM keeps opening studies in five-minute sessions and its exports carry a watermark. Basic (US$10 a month per computer) removes those limits; Professional (US$45 a month per computer) adds Denoise, Process and Analyze.

Do I need Professional for MPR, 3D or DSA?

No. MPR, 3D volume rendering, cine playback, DSA subtraction and metadata editing are included in Basic. Professional adds Denoise (CT, MR and X-ray), Process and Analyze.
